1/8 1954 Ferrari Arno hydroplane

This large scratch built Ferrari Arno XI model measures 3 feet long (36″ x 13″ x 8″ / 91 x 33 x 20cm) and features plank on frame construction. The hood is wood (thin and light) and the hull is made of Heartwood Honduras Mahogany. There are 11 layers of paint and varnish and hundreds of true scale copper nails. It is complete with wooden display base.

Achille Castoldi was a wealthy boat privateer who commissioned an 800kg-class three-point hydroplane hull with a methanol burning, twin supercharged 4.5L Ferrari power plant producing 600 bhp! Ferrari sent chief race engineer Stefano Meazza to help prepare the new engine, and Alberto Ascari showed support by attending the event. On October 15, 1953, Castoldi succeeded in smashing the 800kg class speed record with an average “flying kilometer” two-way speed of 150.49 mph. He followed up the performance later that day by setting another record in the “24 nautical miles” event.

The FerrariShop sells this very same model for US$7500 (!!) making ours a real bargain at 1/5th the price. (x1xx)

We also have one in stock that is slightly smaller at 31″ / 79cm. (x1xx)
