1904 Le Petit Journal newspaper.
This is an illustrated 8 page supplement to the famous French newspaper showing one of the very first road races – the Gordon Bennett Cup. This race took place in the Taunus mountains in Germany and was one of three events sponsored by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., millionaire owner of the New York Herald. It measures 12×17.75″ / 30.5x45cm and is in good condition with yellowing and some staining, but is in overall great shape considering its age.
The main illustration shows the Emperor Guillaume congratulating the race winner, Léon Théry of France who drove his #5 Richard-Brasier car and outran the Fiats, Panhard, Mercedes & De Dion cars. Dated July.3, 1904 and titled – Victoire Francaise – S.M. l’Empereur Guillame felicite Thery, le vainqueur de la Coupe Gordon-Bennett.
