Description
1934 Le Mans winner’s medal
This rare original silvered bronze medal was awarded to Philippe Etancelin for taking first place in the #9 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 LM he co-drove with Luigi Chinetti to win Le Mans.
The vintage bronze plaque measures around 8 x 6″ / 21 x 15cm and has a wonderful patina. It sits within a custom presentation box, and the last image below shows Robert Benoist holding a similar award within its box, right after his 1937 Le Mans victory in the Bugatti (we sold this winner’s medal years ago)!
At this historic 1934 event, Chinetti and Étancelin held on to win comfortably overall, with the second-biggest winning margin to date, of 180 km /110 miles! And on top of this, they used chewing gum to plug a puncture that developed in the fuel tank!
- This historically significant gem of course includes our lifetime certificate, and a second letter from the Etancelin family.
